Ouidah: Ouidah

[wi'da], Stadt in der Republik Benin, nahe der Küste an einer Lagune westlich von Cotonou, 64 100 Einwohner; Museum (Dokumentation des Sklavenhandels) im Fort. Ouidah ist heute Zentrum fetischistischer Kulte mit vielen Tempeln und Klöstern.

Geschichte:

Um 1500 gegründet, wurde Ouidah 1580 portugiesische Handelsniederlassung. 1669 wurden hier gleichzeitig mit einem französischen Fort portugiesische, englische und dänische Forts errichtet. Ouidah war der wichtigste Platz am Golf von Benin für den Sklavenhandel, der nach der Eroberung durch Dahomey (1727) einen weiteren Aufschwung erhielt; 1892 von Frankreich erobert.
